TEXAS! TEXAS!

It's always struck us as a little odd that the great American musical of the West is OKLAHOMA! I mean doesn't it seem more logical that it would have been something about Texas. Don't the lyrics about "something something we belong to the land,/ And the land we belong to is grand," don't they sound like something you'd be more likely to say about Texas. It would even scan, sort of, if instead of "Oklahoma", you sort of sang, "Texas, Texas."

And the jokes. Why we've know Texans who carried six shooters bigger than Oklahoma, or what do you call an intersection in Texas - Oklahoma, or how do you find the freeway exit to Oklahoma - look for the one that says "World's biggest cattle lot." Oh well, maybe, now that we think about it, Texans are happy with having a musical like THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS.

Anyway, below is an assortment of titles from our inventory having to do with Texas in some fashion. Fiction, nonfiction, and we even have a few about Mexico too. If you order any of them from us directly you can get a 20% discount on the price listed.

MYSTERIOUS TIBET

We have an abiding interest in Tibet - the roof of the world, home of the Abominable Snowman, locale of unrecorded Sherlock Holmes adventures. And seemingly Ireland, that most distressful country, to China's England. We've wondered why China seems to take such a hardline about the place. It's not like Tibet was going to invade them or something, and living there - well, no thank you. But then one day in a book by a native born Tibetan there was a casual mention of the "Tibetan Empire." Now those are hardly words that go together like ham-and-eggs in our mind. Still, could there be some ancient grudge that China is paying back - we wonder.

A search of our inventory turns up the following titles linked to Tibet. Look them over and if any interest you, then direct orders and payment will get 10% off the list price.

AN EBAYING WE WILL GO

Yes we offer things on Ebay from time and to time. We've done so in '06 and will do so in '07.

Below in fact are a couple of examples of stuff we'll be offering in early '07.

This first one is an illustration by a famous artist, Walter Crane. Crane was English and pal of William Morris at the the turn of the century. He designed furniture, wall paper, wrote and illustrated books, and was an all round man of art. This illustration is from a famous work of his, FLOWERS FROM SHAKESPEARE'S GARDEN, done around 1906. It's a charming thing done in the fairy style that has been popular for over a hundred years.

If you check on this link, you may see what we're offering currently from that work and others

http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZlazyriverbooksQQhtZ-1QQfrppZ50QQfsopZ1QQfsooZ1QQrdZ0

And next we are also dealing in some even older illustrations by Hippolyte LeComte. These are hand colored lithographs from the 1820 work, COSTUMES CIVIL ET MILITAIRES DE COURT DE FRANCE JUSQUA 1200 A 1800. Lecomte was a member of a family of French artists. His son was one, his father, grandfather, greatgrandfather, and uncle were all as well. While this particular book was sort of early in his career, the images are as much a part of French culture as say Norman Rockwell's are in American life.

So check them out. We think they would make marvelous things to frame and hang up on the wall.

CATS AND FORTUNE TELLING

Enough time has passed that we might consider some reflections on Hurricane Katrina and cats. It's about knowing what's going to happen and what one does about it - especially as a new hurricane season has started and the fate of New Orleans dangles by a thread.

You may recall numerous pictures and accounts of people and their pets during Katrina, especially those supposedly heart rending ones of dogs - dogs separated, even abandoned by their owners, even dogs on roofs surrounded by flood waters. In other words, dumb dogs who were still there when the hurricane hit, but what about cats? I don't recall any similar reports about cats in New Orleans so where were they? Did they all slide out of town in advance of winds, rain, and broken levees, heading for higher and dryer ground.

One wonders, in fact perhaps there should be a Congressional investigation into the matter - What did cats know, and when did they know it, and why didn't they tell us about it. But good luck trying to get answers out of them, it'll probably be all "Me-who? Me-what?" and most crushingly, "Me-why?"

All of which leads us to wonder about the idea for a book, CATS AND FORTUNE TELLING. Through the ages cats have been worshipped and admired for their secret wisdom - worshipped as gods in ancient Eygpt, feared and burned as witches' helpers in the Middle Ages. So why not a book on how to tell the future with cats. It could have chapters on the best kind of cats for telling particular types of fortune - confess now, have you ever seen a poor Persian; surely they're the ones to ask about money and investments. Or take sporting events, maybe an ever athletic Siamese could shed light on winners and losers in that field, and consider the common ordinary housecat, the kind who "hates my boyfriend", as good a guide in relationships as any advice columnist.

There could be chapters and pictures about how to foretell the future with your cat. Should you simply ask or pray with suitable sacrifice, and how to interpret the answers - pictures of cats jumping, yawning, sleeping, and what that means. In fact, you could solicit contributions on the web from cat owners about how their cats guide and advise them.

So there is our suggestion for a book (and Blue Bart will be expecting a cut of the royalties).

MEMORIALS AND MEMORIES

We are here displaying some examples from our inventory of memorial volumes. Those books issued in memory of various persons and usually done by family or friends. In a sense, perhaps every biography is a memorial, but most of the ones shown here have a more personal connection to the subject. There may be pictures and work done by the subject, letters, diary entries, excerpts from speeches. There is frequently contributions and eulogies from those who worked with or loved the dearly departed.

Certain types of careers seem to encourage such product. Thus we see many for clergymen, politicians, doctors - all persons who served others. They also are produced in memory of businessmen, entertainers, and sports figures.

But even the ordinary, those of little or no fame or notoriety, can be the subjects if they leave behind a flock of grieving relatives and friends.

There are examples of all those below, and they may be of interest to historians, genealogists, or family members. What we don't have are examples of poetic memorials, and this is the sort we think the most durable.

Such works as Tennyson's IN MEMORIAM and Whitman's "When Lilacs Last Bloomed" were in grief and memory of certain persons. And if we can not always name the original subject, at least the works are still studied and quoted, and likely to continue to be so for centuries to come. There are no doubt other works of similar nature (A mark of our ignorance that we can't name any just now) for more recently passed away, and we could also mention some from Roman and Grecian history as well. So it seems the surest way of being remembered down through the ages is to be a friend, a good friend, of a poet.

If you are interested in ordering any of the works below, you can do so through though such sites as ABE or Biblio. If you order from us directly (payment by Paypal or mail) and we can offer a small discount for avoiding some fees and commissions.

CATS AND SLEEP

Whoever invented the term "catnap" was inaccurate, even slanderous, for cats do not nap. They sleep and sleep and sleep. They are, it is clear, connoisseurs of sleep.

If they could speak, they would probably discuss sleep like some of us discuss wine, arguing over the best kinds of sleep, the best places to sleep, and we have no doubt, the best season for sleep.

Consider winter - the rich deepness of sleep on a heating vent as the snow gently piles up in the streets and on the roofs unless a shrieking wind is blowing it off. Or take spring - the refreshing vigor of sleep, the renewal of one's energy on a spring morning when there are birds to stalk, grass to be chewed. Summer and Fall, no doubt, have their fans as well who would rise in their defense - only they're asleep just now.

This meditation is brought on by the sight of Blue Bart, sleeping now on the floor. No dummy he since the hardwood floor is blissfully cool on even the hottest and most humid summer day. However, Bart is beyond summer sleep - he is engaged in the sleep of an elder cat.

He lies on the floor so utterly still that we watch him for several moments, looking for some sign of life. Finally, we see a slight lift of his rib cage and are reassured for now. Indeed, that torso once so sleek and hunter lean has turned as soft and lumpy as one of those mittens we pull hot pans out of the oven with, and his legs and paws - they are stretched out before him like a drowning man reaching vainly for rescue. And his whiskers, once as dark as his fur - today we discover that they are turning white.

It is a fact that saddens us now to know that if you have a pet. Very likely you will outlive it. At least, you don't have that problem with books, but then books don't jump up on the bed at 7 am and suggest you are a paragon of humans if you will only get up and open a can of catfood.

5/4/06 If you're just dropping in, you're in luck. We're starting a sale. Briefly, order any of the books in the "Cheap Cheap" list from us directly and get 10% off the price. Order 3 or more and get 20% off. Payment should be by check, money order, or paypal. Shipment via domestic USP is $3.00 for one book and $1.00 for each additional book in an order. Discounts are for total order, including shipping.

And remember, you're not just buying books. You're supporting a hungry cat.

4/24/06 We're updating things today so it may look a bit strange for awhile.

Spring is nearly here - sort of ten degrees up, eight degrees down, but the sap is rising so we are going to update things and put a few interesting items up for viewing.

BLUE BART

To cover the most interesting topic first, Bart the cat has been to the vet again. His heart rate has apparently stabilized, but sadly he continues to lose weight. At this point we almost feel like giving him all the junk food he wants and loves so that he may at least go out feeling happy and stuffed.

BOOKS AND COMPUTERS

You may have seen those tv ads for some sort of mobile phone service - where the sound drops out as the character is clearly screaming at the top of his voice. We feel that way about email and computers. Whenever there is some change with our computer, and we don't know if it's hardware, software, or whatever, it seems to do something to our email. We used to be able to email photos of things, but now we beat our heads against a stone wall in that regard. Thus the appearance of listings and pictures on this site from time to time. It's really to show someone what a book looks like, and you, the rest of the world, can gawk on as well.

The pictures below are of a title which is a possible gem in our inventory. That said, there are a few caveats. To begin with the "Babe" part of the inscription is in such faint blue ink that it's practically a ghost and probably can't be reproduced. We've taken several shots of it and here's what we got.

Even greater is the fact that being a very busy person, it's well established that "Babe" did not sign all her "signed" books. Her supportive and helpful husband, George, often did it. The signature in this book has been compared with other signatures by her and the book was examined by a handwriting expert last year. The result is muddy. It's very similar to her signature, but the expert could not say with 100% certainy if it was hers or his work.

Well, there you have it. Also the price listed below is that on a fixed price site. However, we're open to offers.

This is another example of pictures for our gallery, or judging a book by its cover. Ms. Dehkes doesn't seem to have written much, and her other works were for young girls, but if we at say the age of 10 to 12 had seen this dustjacket with its vibrant colors, its strong lines, we would have read it right away.

BLUE BART UPDATE.

For those who like to keep track of cats, Bart has had his latest vet visit and the news is... On the one hand he hasn't lost any more weight. Didn't gain either. So we'll try uping the dosage of his current medication.

You ever have an old car or some other machine that wasn't exactly broken, but always had some little thing going wrong with it. Didn't run like it did when it was new. Well, Bart doesn't have anything critical. All his test results are sort of within acceptable. Well, close to acceptable, but a little bit off on this, a little bit off on that. He's going to have a few more pills to take, and will be tested for more things next month. So that's how it goes with him.

CONTROVERSY

Tomorrow night we'll be starting an auction of a notorious, infamous, slightly celebritious (?) book. It's titled THE BOY ; A PHOTOGRAPHIC ESSAY.

The reason it's all these things is that a copy once belonged to Michael Jackson and his possession of it was brought up at his most recent trial as an indication of how rotten and depraved he was. Really. They had expert witnesses to testify to that idea. Well, there's a little more to the case and you can read about it at our Ebay auction which we'll post a link to in a few days and also a picture of the book's cover (which is all the jury got to see at the trial)

THE GALLERY

This is a new feature we're putting on. They say don't judge a book by its cover, but we do all the time. When we're out buying books, frequently we'll pick a book we know nothing about just because we like the dustjacket art. It catches our eye, it amuses us. So we're going to start putting up some of these books with appealing dustjacket art. If you find any of them interesting and wonder about buying one, drop us a line at lazyriverbooks@gmail.com and we'll see what we can do.

This first selection might be called comic or cartoon art. All of the dustjackets are by artists who worked prior to 1960 and much of their work appeared in popular magazines such as New Yorker, Punch, Judge etc.

This is by Richard Decker whose work appeared frequently in The New Yorker and his work is now sold at auctions. He did both the dustjacket and some interior illustrations for the book which also interested us because it's about women and money. The subtitle is "Financial Facts of Life for the Average Girl."

This one was done by Jefferson Machamer who started working in Judge Magazine in the 1920's and then did a number of newspaper cartoons and comic strips in the 30's. The room mates or lodging house comedy now is a staple of tv sitcoms like "Three's Company" or "Four Kings", but it's really quite old going back to movies and perhaps old time radio shows of the 30's and 40's, and also in plays and books for decades before that. This one is set in WWII when a housing shortage developed because of large numbers of military and government workers in some places.

Finally we have a British book and artist, Ionicus. Here's a wrap around jacket and if the art seems familiar it's because the illustrator was a staple of Punch and well known for his illustrations of P. G. Wodehouse's Jeeves books.

Hope you enjoy all of them and we'll try to find more in other veins for future editions.

DISCOUNTING

Oh by the way it's January when we do a round of discounting on books that have been sitting around here too long. If you check out our inventory now and in the coming days, you'll see the prices on many books lowered by ten to thirty per cent. And if you order from us directly, there may be even more savings.

PAY NO ATTENTION TO THESE PICTURES.

You see I have a new computer. Which has new programs and whistles and bells so it won'd do some of the thing I used to do with my old computer. Or I can't figure out how to do them. For instance, I use to be able to send emails with attachments to people - not now. So someone has asked to see a picture of a book I have cataloged. What to do? Ah ha, I'll post some pictures of it here and they can come look, but anybody else can skip over all that below.

Oh, all right. Briefly this is a copy of GRAPHIS : PACKAGING. It's an annual devoted to art and industrial design. This is the very first volume in the series, and I believe they're still being issued. The focus of each annual is sometimes a bit diffent but this one was on packaging, everything from cigarette packs to record covers to milk cartons and lots of other stuff. There are 1022 photos, mostly in b&w. It's $65 plus shipping, and if you'd like to read a fuller description just check it out on say Biblio.com, or drop me a line.

Anyway below we hope are some pictures of the front and back cover of the dustjacket and a couple of pages from the interior. Here goes.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

A new year begins and we will see about posting here now that the holidays are over.

For any who are worried, Blue Bart remains himself - he eats, he sleeps, he complains. And he hates his medicine. More than that we can not report until after his next vet visit.

ODD TOPICS

From time to time we hear of subjects unfamiliar to us and wonder if there are any books on such subjects. Readable, fun books.

For instance we recently heard a native of that country refer to the "Tibetan Empire". Tibet had an empire? - over what and when? Is there a real reason why China seems so irritable over Tibet, some unspoken rivaly in the past?

And then we ran across a mention of the Swiss Civil War, apparently sometime in the 19th century. I mean we had always leaned towards Harry Lime's attitude: 500 years of Swiss history and all they produced was chocolate and cuckoo clocks. What was this Civil War like, any great battles or heroes?

The great actors of horror films are pretty well covered in biographies. Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, Vincent Price - there have been more than a few books done on them. In fact, there are several in our stock if anyone's interested. But one actor was relatively neglected - Peter Lorre. We knew of only one book on him, THE LIFE AND FILMS OF PETER LORRE, and while interesting, it was by no means definitive. Now we hear there has been a 600 page biography of Lorre published, with research and interviews of some of the Hollywood's greatest figures, many of whom are now passed away. The name eludes us, but you can find it with a little research.

The next update is scheduled for about two weeks from now, but if anything interesting occurs we'll see what we can do.

CATS HAVE FACES!

It so happened that one morning as we were lying warm and comfortable in our bed without a care in the world we were crushed by this lump landing on our chest and then this warm, fuzzy nose pressed against our face in that repulsive practice known as kitty kissing, especially when said nose is sort of wet. As we were eyeball to eyeball so to speak we observed a little mentioned fact, cats have faces very much like humans.

It's true. For instance, look at the ears. You may say they're large and pointed, but many people have large ears : Clark Gable, David Letterman, Alfred E. Newman, and as for being pointed, if you have ever attended a science fiction convention, you would have encountered numerous pointy earred individuals, Klingons, Romulans, and Vulcans. So that's not an eliminator.

Next the forehead, low and backward sweeping like a Neanderthal. Well look closely at some of those players on professional football teams. Nothing inhuman about that.

The eyes might seem a bit strange, large and perhaps slanted, but what they remind me of are those of certain femme fatales in 1940's movies, especially the exotic, sort of film noir types with names like Somola, Alana, and Tallulah.

The nose, you say, large and flat. Please, are the noses of Edward G. Robinson and Mickey Rooney dainty little things, and if you have a Siamese, then I suggest you consider Bob Hope's proboscis.

As for the whiskers, I simply consider them sort of flourishing moustaches, the envy of certain professional atheletes no doubt.

It's true that cats don't seem to have lips, but in some photographs I doubt that George Bush has any lips also.

It's only in the last item, teeth that I admit cats differ greatly from humans. Those fangs long and curved. Well unless vampires really do exist.

CATS ETC.

We'll keep this short in the belief that the medical adventures of Bart etc can't be that interesting. The hunt for the orphan drug goes on. We're attempting to order it because it's practically Bart's last chance.

If we had been paying attention, we might be able to give a detailed description of the ambulance, the ER, the CAT scan, etc, but for most of the time we were in excruciating pain and then a drug induced haze, all we can report is that Bart has been knocked off the top of the medical totem pole. Another reason for finding an economical option for him.

SEA DOGS: HORATIO HORNBLOWER, JACK AUBREY, RICHARD BOLITHO, THOMAS KYDD, ALAN LEWRIE, PHILLIP HAZZARD, ETC.

Long a popular genre has been the sea story, particularly those set in the Napoleonic wars and before, about 1793-1815. Just why this should be we're not certain. Most of us couldn't tell a capstan from a spinnaker, and I've never been too clear on what the leeshore is.

Nevertheless authors such as C.S. Forester and Patrick O'Brien have ruled the high seas with their stories and their books are very collectible. Let's see if we have any. Yes we have the reprint of an early work, THE GOLDEN OCEAN, and a first American of H.M.S. SURPRISE.

http://dogbert.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?bx=off&sts=t&ds=30&vci=834427&bi=0&an=patrick+o%27brian&sortby=2

Sadly though, no Forester. Either of these two writers would be cause for glee to find in first edition, but what got us to wondering is who else, among 20th century authors of sea stories, is or may be collectible. No one leaps to mind, but here's a roundup of some possibilities and suggestions that we thought of.

Alexander Kent's Richard Bolitho series runs to over a dozen books and are best sellers. We've always enjoyed them and on research we find that English first editions are a good thing, but we're very dubious of American ones. Prices for even early books seem to be quite low.

We'd also recommend for reading his work under his real name, Douglas Reeman. They're sea stories mostly, but of the 20th century. Good reads though perhaps a bit all similar for characters and plot.

Dewey Lambdin's Alan Lewrie series is ongoing and we find great fun, but it manages to offend some collectors in two ways. For starters, the character's nickname of Tomcat refers to more than his fondness for having cats on his ships. It's sort of Tom Jones with a bit of Flashman goes to sea, and these lusty adventures put off some people we've found. But more importantly, some collectors we know refuse to buy any of the books because of production problems. Brand new copies would have pages fly free like cards from a Las Vegas dealer's deck which may explain why we so rarely find any of his books at sales.

Still in checking online, we see some nice prices for first editions of early books in the series so we'll keep an eye out for them in the best of condition.

Something we recently ran across is the Thomas Kydd series by Julian Stockwin. The author is alive and writing. Now up we believe to the 5th in the series. His latest book seems to have a limited edition as well as a regular which seems a sign of future value, and the author is out making appearances all over England at least which is also a good thing. The British first editions are climbing and there's some possibility with the Americans as well though you can still see low prices on both. We have one available.

http://dogbert.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?bx=off&sts=t&ds=30&vci=834427&bi=0&an=julian+stockwin&sortby=2

It's SEAFLOWER, third in the series, and while some critics praise the books, we weren't too pleased with either the main character or the plotting. Perhaps those things will improve in future books.

Though they're not Napoleonic we can't resist mentioning V.A. Stuart's Hazzard books. These are set in mid-Victorian times, the Crimean War and such, and are wonderful reading. She also did a land based series set in India at the time of the Great Mutiny. In England and other parts of the British Commonwealth, the writer was evidently huge, but she could barely get arrested in the United States. Both of her series only appeared in paperback here, though they did have English hardcover editions which we've found now and then. She also wrote most of the internationally best selling series, THE AUSTRALIANS, but under a pen name alas.

We offer one of the American paperbacks of a Hazzard title.

http://dogbert.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?bx=off&sts=t&ds=30&vci=834427&bi=0&an=v.+a.+stuart&sortby=2

and for a completist, a couple of American hardcover editions of titles in THE AUSTRALIANS series.

http://dogbert.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?bx=off&sts=t&ds=30&vci=834427&bi=0&an=william+stuart+long&sortby=2

There are high and low prices for her books, but we'd push her simply as a bookseller's favorite.

A few more thoughts before quitting. Check under alternate spellings when looking up such authors as Forester/Forrester or O'Brian/O'Brien. If the name's misspelled, the seller may also have mispriced the volume as well. And we've wondered what a series told from the French viewpoint might be like. Of course, the French navy did get beaten up quite often and many of its officers either fled or were executed during the Revolution, but still it might make for a change to see things from the other side.

CAT STORY

In the perhaps delusion that there are some who follow the fortunes of a high strung feline we bring the following recent developments.

Bart seems happy and hungry most of the time, ravenous in fact which is another sign of his condition. He is off all medication while the vet seeks out a last resort, orphan drug once used for humans and found to have some beneficial side effects for cats. We will also be looking into a perhaps lower cost option in the high tech regimen which is really demanding. I mean, saving the kitty litter for a month or more so it won't set off the radiation detectors in the local landfill.

BLUE BART UPDATE

We really thought BB was looking better before his last appointment. He seemed fatter. His hair seemed shiny and glossier. When he felt like it, he was feisty and more active. Which shows what we know.

The latest exam shows him continuing his ongoing weight loss; his latest medication isn't helping, and that gleam in his eye, the spring in his step - all symptoms of his condition.

Now we've got an estimate of the next potential course of treatment - very high tech and very expensive, thousands of dollars. We're fond of you, cat, but unless business or luck takes a great leap upward, you've got a shortened life expectancy.

GENERAL THINGS

It was not our intention that this project should seem quite so erratic as it has in the past month. However, while it's nothing compared to Katrina, we have had our own technological disaster sweeping through our business.

It's a new computer, you see, because the old one was dying fast. This one is suppose to be faster, stronger, bigger, able to leap tall buildings - a regular Superman of computers. Yeah, but it wouldn't connect to the internet, wouldn't get email, wouldn't handle photos from our digital camera, didn't have our book inventory, and wouldn't open the files for our writing projects.

Little by little, we seem to be recovering those abilities, but it's a long, tedious slog so it's going slowly and other projects are having to wait their turn.

BUSINESSS BOOKS

One of the categories that we find interesting is Business books, fiction and non-fiction, from the 1920's and 30's. The wildly positive and the deeply negative of things, so to speak.

Listed below are some in our inventory just now. We'll add some more comments about them later in the day.

If you are interested in purchasing any, by all means drop us a lint at

There's nothing to report about Blue Bart's health this week though wait till next week after he had another visit to the vet.

But in considering his ongoing physical problems and fragility, a somewhat related matter occurred to us.

Cat lovers, and possibly cat haters, like to go on about the great power and wisdom of felines. Oh, the god of the ancient Eygptians, immortalized in statues and hieroglyphs; the familiar of witches and wizards, demons in fur; one of the favorite alien species of SF and F writers, even suggested as the next dominant species after humans have run their course.

Hello, people. Let's consider some things. Look at that head which is demanding to be petted and scratched. You can cover it with the palm of your hand, you could cup and hold it with the fingers of your hand. And those front paws, so deadly so sharp, that pat on your leg when somebody wants fed. They're not much bigger than your thumbs. Who is it who gets carried around in your arms or sometimes on your shoulders - not a great dane. Who snuggles up next to you for warmth on winter nights - not a bengal tiger. And who when confronted by several choices of action, sets down and licks his rear leg.

So the next time somebody starts on about the greatness or deviousness of cats, if you're well mannered, don't exactly sneer or laugh at them, but remember, it's just a cat.

And now, somebody wants fed again.

ARKHAM HOUSE AUCTIONS

This week we're running a series of auctions on Ebay. We're offering Arkham House hardcovers from the 1940's, 50's, 60's, and 70's. Some in dustjacket, some signed.

If you don't know, Arkham House was founded in the 1930's to preserve the work of H.P. Lovecraft in hardcover. They went to do other such authors as Clark Ashton Smith, Fritz Leiber, Jr. They're the premier publishers of horror, dark fantasy, and similar genres.

You can always check our inventory on ABE which allows publisher searches to see what else we may have by that publisher or authors it did.

BART & POETRY

We apologize for the briefness of last week's writing. There's a heat wave going on, and any time the temperature goes above 80 yours truly melts like a bowl of Ben & Jerry's. And that fur covered lump over in the hallway isn't a throw rug either.

There's nothing in particular to report on Bart medically, but just wait. Meanwhile we might mention that in the spirit of West Side Story (or is The Scarlet Pimpernel?) we're a poet and you didn't know it. Naturally one of the themes and inspirations for our work is the furry one so here are a few that living with a cat has given rise to.

When my cat goes out midnight dancing

And across the neighbors' roofs is prancing,

While everyone's sleeping,

From window to window he's creeping,

Finding everything he sees most entrancing.

Cats' speed in not our speed,

And it's never ever your speed.

They don't worry,

They don't hurry,

They don't see the need,

Unless, of course, it's time for their feed.

FAVORITE AUTHOR

Last summer we finally started reading Shelby Foote's history of the Civil War in 3 volumes and over 3,000 pages. We highly recommend it. After we finished we started looking for another massive history of the Civil War, a similar experience as it were. Well, we tried several thick books but found nothing comparable until we remembered one of our favorite authors, Fletcher Pratt.

Pratt was a reporter, a librarian, a boxer (probably flyweight), and if he were alive today, he might be designing computer wargames - he was a recognized expert in wargaming. He was also one of the finest writers of popular history who ever wrote. He didn't just do the Civil War. He went from the War of 1812 in his first book right up through WWII. Mostly he was interested in naval warfare, but he also wrote about land action as well. His work on the Civil War includes the best selling one volume history, ORDEAL BY FIRE, but he wrote a number of other books on the subject as well, and he also wrote biographies of Napoleon, Julius Caesar, a true crime book, and a host of others. His fiction, mostly science fiction and fantasy, is Hall of Fame material where his collaborations with L. Sprague de Camp are concerned. Alas, the stuff he wrote by himself is not to our taste, but other people seem to like it.

If you've never read anything by him, we suggest you run out and sample some now. You won't be disappointed. Below is a link to a listing of some of his books we have for sale. Now, there's a thunderstorm and the big grey mouse is cowering under our bed, so we have to go.

They say no news is good news - bah humbug. Sometimes it's just too boring or awful to report.

Anyway Bart has had another visit to the vet. He has not lost weight, but dumbfoundingly hasn't gained any either. Holding steady is supposedly a good thing despite all the gross and slimy things we have poured down his throat. He retains his predilection for the junkier forms of cat food - the equivalents of beer, pizza, and barbeque potato chips. Would that we could join him in that. He is on a new medication which he doesn't seem to object to and mostly lies around, resembling from some angles a fur covered sausage.

Blue Bart is currently on a diet. The vet was concerned with his weight loss and asked that we get him to eat more and more and more. As a cat he's naturally a finicky eater, and now as a result of various gifts, donations, and experiments he has more treats and snacks in the refrigerator than we do.

Most dismaying is his passion for the really cheap catfood. The kind where the ingredients read "chickhen byproducts, beef byproducts," and most ominously "meat byproducts." Sows' ears! Chickhen toes! and Fish eyes!

ALTERNATE HISTORY

Among our specialities is Alternate History: the what if category. What if the South had won the Civil War, what if the Allies had lost WWII. And other such scenarios. Not surprisingly most of what we run across is related to American/English history, and some time it gets a bit boring. Aren't there any new ideas out there?

Recently on another ecircle we encountered a discussion of AH as written in other countries, and it was rather interesting. We have seen a bit now and then, but there's quite a bit more we weren't aware of.

The Germans have done some such as Otto Basil's THE TWILIGHT MEN - Hitler wins the war, big surprise. Though actually in true German fashion they've written some dense philosophical works on the matter of AH.

The French, unsurprisingly, are fond of Napoleonic variations. We'd also expect there to be some about the French Revolution. The only things we've ever encountered in English were by Pierre Barbet from about 30 years ago - BAPHOMET'S METEOR, THE JOAN OF ARC REPLAY.

At one time Poland was almost the largest country in Europe, stretching from the Baltic to the Black Sea. Naturally popular AH now focuses on a more satisfactory outcome than modern day, a continuation of its golden age so to speak.

AH is popular in Russia with much of it being on Russia as a major power and the US a bush league player or not even in existence. Perhaps the topic is too sensitive now, but we'd expect that someday they'd get into what if the Revolution had never occurred, what if Stalin had not gained power, etc.

In Japan they're very fond in nearly all media: comics, books, video games; of alternate WWII. The sort where Japan wins major battles, invades Hawaii, and then California. They do have some darker visions though where Japan is invaded and occupied by Russia or even Nazi Germany.

One theme that was alluded to but may not have been developed is the reverse ally. There's the idea of Japan coming to the aid of Great Britain in its darkest hour, around Dunkirk. This has the benefit of giving Japan a pretty free hand in China and the Pacific. Another idea was after Pearl Harbor, Hitler declares war on Japan, offering assistance to the US. This delays, perhaps fatally, US entry into the European war.

War seems a favorite variation for AH, no matter what nationality. After all, winning instead of losing would be universally popular, and it has the benefit of often being familar to other countries' readers as well. In fact, picking an event or personage that may be internationally known may be crucial if a writer wanted greater popularity.

We were trying to imagine some points in other countries that American readers would be able to follow as well as the actual inhabitants. For Cuba, how about if Castro never had power: either failing as a guerrilla or being overthrown by the Bay of Pigs Invasion. Hint, the Mafia was big in Cuba at the time of the Revolution.

And how about Africa, what if Shaka Zulu managed to conquer a far larger area than the relatively small Zulu nation, say something of Genghis Khan proportions, and his descendants held onto it against the invading Europeans?

Anyway it's all interesting to think of.

Bart has paid another visit to the vet who is "concerned" about his lab results. We wish she would stop referring to him as a "geriatric" cat. He's only a teenager, but we are starting to eye him like an HMO faced with a chronic condition patient, or we may start his own pbwiki, a sort of Save Blue Bart page. Just have to learn how to upload pictures.

YOU DEMAND IT

We recently read THE GODFATHER RETURNS by Mark Winegardner, an authorized prequel to the book and movies. The writing was interesting, not your usual best seller pablum, and we found ourselves engrossed in the story and characters so that at the end we wanted another book to find out what happens. Oh, that's what the originals were about. Well, we still like Mr. Winegardner's writing.

No doubt, you'll say it was done "for the money." Well, of course it was. They wouldn't think of doing another book if they didn't think they'd get some money out of it. That's the thing about sequels all through history, in every medium, books, plays, movies, the fans demand more.

When the first story teller at the caveman's fire finished his tale about how Ugh killed the bear, his listeners said, "tell us more stories about Mighty Bear-Killer Ugh and we'll give you another slice of meat." And it's been that way ever since.

Homer probably stretched the telling of the Trojan war out to nearly as long as the war itself just to satisfy his listeners. Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John, not to mention Thomas, kept thinking up new miracles that Jesus had performed, or so they wrote because the faithful demanded more stories.

Robin Hood, of whom we've done research on, first appeared in folk tales around 1100 and they kept making them up, changing names, places, adding new things, right up until the 1300's. It wasn't until movies came along that the story was sort of frozen in time and place, but in the past couple decades variants have started appearing again, because the readers, the viewers, all want more.

And Sherlock Holmes, well practically from the first decade more stories than Doyle ever wrote started appearing. Some of them had different names, but the readers knew it was Holmes all the same, and they're still going strong after a hundred years.

Ah, which brings us to the bookselling point of this week's outburst. Lazy River Books specializes among other things in Sherlock Holmes. We offer a number of pastiches and critical studies in our online catalog, including a number of the Solar Pons ones by August Derleth. Check out the list here, and if you don't find something, drop us a line because there's stuff we haven't even listed yet.
